The Pattern Behind Morse Code Numbers
Digits are the easiest part of Morse code, because they follow one simple rule. Every number is five signals long, and the dots eat the dashes from left to right.
- 1 1 is .----
- 2 2 is ..---
- 3 3 is ...--
- 4 4 is ....-
- 5 5 is .....
- 6 6 is -....
- 7 7 is --...
- 8 8 is ---..
- 9 9 is ----.
- 0 0 is -----
How to read it
Start at 1: one dot, then four dashes. For 2, the second dash becomes a dot. For 3, the third. Keep going and you reach 5, which is five dots — the halfway point, highlighted above.
From 6 onwards the same thing happens in reverse: dashes push the dots back out from the left. 6 is one dash and four dots, 7 is two dashes and three dots, and so on until 0, which is five dashes.
So 0 and 5 are exact opposites, and so are 1 and 6, 2 and 7, 3 and 8, 4 and 9. If you can remember 1 to 5, you already know 6 to 0.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do numbers work in Morse code?
Every digit uses exactly five signals, which makes numbers easy to spot in a stream of Morse. The pattern is regular: 1 starts with one dot followed by four dashes, and each following digit swaps one more dash for a dot until 5, after which the pattern reverses.
What is 0 in Morse code?
0 is -----, five dashes. It is the longest single character in everyday International Morse code.
What is 1 in Morse code?
1 is .----: one dot followed by four dashes.
What is 5 in Morse code?
5 is ....., five dots. It sits exactly halfway through the pattern, which is why it is the mirror image of 0.
What is 911 in Morse code?
911 is ----. .---- .----. Each digit is sent separately, with a normal letter gap between them.
Can Morse code contain letters and numbers together?
Yes. Letters and digits are mixed freely, which is how call signs such as W1AW are sent. The Morse code translator handles both at once.
How do you separate numbers in Morse code?
Digits inside one number are separated by a normal letter gap of three time units. A word gap of seven units, written as a slash, separates one number from the next.
Are Morse code numbers international?
Yes. The digits shown here are part of International Morse code as defined in ITU-R M.1677-1 and are the same everywhere.
