How to Read a Morse Code Chart
Look up the character on the left, read its signals on the right. There are only two signals to tell apart:
- a dot (dit) — one time unit of tone
- a dash (dah) — three time units
The silence matters just as much as the tone. Inside a character the parts are one unit
apart, between two characters there are three units, and between two words there are
seven. Get those gaps wrong and .- -. (AN) turns into .--. (P).
Printing this chart
The Print Chart button opens your browser's print dialog with a stripped-down version of this page: no navigation, no adverts, no buttons — just the title and the full table, sized to fit the paper.
To keep a digital copy instead, choose Save as PDF as the destination in the same dialog. That works in every current browser, so there is nothing to download.
Letters and Numbers in Morse Code
The 26 letters are the part most people learn first. Their lengths are not arbitrary:
frequent letters such as E (.) and T (-) were given the
shortest codes, so ordinary text takes less time to send. The
Morse code alphabet page goes through all of them
with audio for each letter.
The ten digits are more regular than the letters: each one is exactly five signals long and they follow a single pattern that runs from 1 through to 0. The Morse code numbers page shows that pattern and has a converter for turning any number into Morse.
Punctuation is used less often, and outside formal traffic operators tend to stick to the period, comma, question mark and slash. To convert a whole sentence rather than looking up single characters, use the Morse code translator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Morse code chart?
A Morse code chart is a single reference table that lists every character alongside its dots and dashes — the letters A to Z, the digits 0 to 9 and the standard punctuation marks.
How do you read a Morse code chart?
Find the character in the left column and read its code on the right. A dot is a short signal, a dash is a long one lasting three times as long.
Does Morse code include numbers?
Yes. All ten digits have five-signal codes, listed in the numbers section of the chart and explained in more detail on the Morse code numbers page.
Does Morse code include punctuation?
Yes. International Morse code defines codes for the period, comma, question mark, apostrophe, exclamation mark, slash, brackets, ampersand, colon, semicolon, equals sign, plus, hyphen, underscore, quotation mark, dollar sign and at sign. All of them are in the chart above.
Can I print this Morse code chart?
Yes. Use the Print button above the chart, or your browser's normal print command. The navigation, adverts and buttons are removed automatically so you get a clean reference sheet. Choosing “Save as PDF” in the print dialog gives you a PDF copy.
Is this International Morse Code?
Yes. Every code on this page follows International Morse code as defined by the International Telecommunication Union in recommendation ITU-R M.1677-1.
What do dots and dashes mean?
They are simply short and long signals. A dot lasts one time unit, a dash lasts three, and there is one unit of silence between the parts of a character.
What is SOS on a Morse code chart?
SOS is ... --- ... — S, O and S read straight off the chart. It is normally sent as one continuous sequence without the usual letter gaps.
